Black Lives Matter

We raise our voices in solidarity with all protesters against systemic racism, police brutality and social and economic injustice. We share the grief and anger of this moment and we recognize that the need for meaningful change is urgent and long overdue.

Black Lives Matter. We remember George Floyd. We remember Kendra James, Quanice Hayes, Aaron Campbell, Keaton Otis, James Perez, and Terrell Johnson who have been killed here in Portland, Oregon. We remember Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Philando Castile, Manny Ellis, Sandra Bland, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, Tony McDade, David McAtee, Jamel Floyd, Sean Monterrosa and the countless others who have lost their lives.

We’ve been reflecting on the historical role of printing in creating change and resistance. The printing press can give a voice to those that would otherwise be kept silent by the powers that be. It can also be a tool of repression and divisiveness. It is our responsibility to make sure our presses and voices are not silent — to acknowledge and raise high the voices of our aggrieved black brothers and sisters who have suffered under unspeakable police brutality and so many forms of injustice.

While we call to action this powerful tool, the work of the press can only extend so far — to inform, to cajole, to call to action — it is the people, standing in harm’s way, who are creating change. To them we extend our hands — and hearts — to help build a truly just and equal society.
